NVIDIA dropped four billion dollars today on two companies most people have never heard of: Lumentum and Coherent. Two billion each. For photonics.
This is the kind of news that scrolls past on a ticker and means nothing to 99% of people. But it tells you exactly where the AI infrastructure war is heading next.
The Bottleneck Moved
For years, the constraint on AI training was compute. Not enough GPUs. Not enough FLOPS. Everyone scrambled to buy H100s, then Blackwells, stacking them into clusters that drink megawatts like water.
But something happens when you put 100,000 GPUs in a room: they need to talk to each other. And suddenly the bottleneck is not the chips themselves - it is the wires between them.
Electrical interconnects have limits. Copper degrades signals over distance. Bandwidth caps out. Heat accumulates. The bigger your cluster gets, the more your chips spend waiting for data instead of crunching it.

The GPU wars are not over, but the battlefield expanded. It is not just about who has the best chip anymore. It is about who has the best interconnect, the best memory bandwidth, the best power delivery, the best cooling. The whole stack matters now.
What This Means
If you work in infrastructure - the actual plumbing of datacenters - you already know this. The AI boom is not just about buying GPUs. It is about the entire physical plant that supports them. Power. Cooling. Networking. All of it becomes critical path.
The companies that will matter in five years are not necessarily the ones with the flashiest AI models. They are the ones that figured out how to actually run the hardware at scale without everything catching fire or grinding to a halt.
